In my opinion, an absurdly underrated Martin model. These ‘M’ series instruments have an interesting back story to them. In the 1930s flattop guitars were not a huge seller for any guitar manufacturer, in the sense that archtop instruments generally outstripped the sales numbers of flattops by a considerable margin. Two of the bigger players in the archtop scene at the time were of course Gibson and and Epiphone. Martin, in response to flagging sales, decided to enter this market by introducing three new models, designated C, R, and F. Whilst the R corresponded to the flat-top size 00 (14-5/8″ lower bout), C to the 000 (15″), the 16″-wide ‘F’ had no equivalent pre-war flattop. In essence, the ‘F’ was the same depth as a 000 but with the lower bout expanded by an inch. Technically speaking they’re to be considered a ‘0000’ size, so a touch bigger across all proportions than the more commonly known ‘000’ and ‘OM’ models. These guitars offer a very unique projection and dynamic range. Highly articulate ‘Rosewood’ tonality without the commonly found overpowering woofiness of modern Rosewood dreadnoughts. This piece has seen a professionally repaired top crack repair, a neck reset and a re-fret. Ready to be enjoyed for years to come. One of the most uniquely voiced Martins we’ve seen in recent times. Incluedes a hardcase. Made in USA 550414.
